Can you name the biggest industry in America?
If you guessed manufacturing, you’ve missed the mark a little.
The answer is real estate. According to Ooma’s new study, 13.8% of the U.S. GDP is bound up in real estate, renting, and leasing. Real estate alone accounted for $3.68 trillion in value added in 2024. It leads every other industry by a wide margin. Manufacturing actually claimed second place at 9.8%.
Rounding out the top five, the team lists professional and technical services (8%), finance and insurance (7.6%), and state and local government (7.6%).
Every rent check, mortgage payment, and commercial lease all contribute to this national economic powerhouse of an industry.
