The American Flag: A Relatively Young Symbol

Compared to ancient European flags, the American flag feels like the new kid on the block. It is now slightly over sixty years old, officially flying in 1960. The flag features fifty stars and thirteen stripes in an excellent design. The stars are a nod to all fifty of the states that exist today, while the stripes honor the original thirteen colonies that laid the foundation for the entire American family. In 1776, there were just thirteen stars on the flag. The American flag is the most significant in the world despite not being as old as some flags from other countries. It narrates the history of America’s founding and its subsequent expansion.
