Currencies are a major tie to history as they’re challenged through economic hardship and carry symbols relating to a nation’s culture and historical figures. While some currencies are replaced with new ones as nations are re-shaped or economies fall, others have stood the test of time.
This infographic from Madison Trust Company shows us which world currencies have the longest histories. The oldest by far is the United Kingdom’s pound sterling, which has changed and adapted over the years but has nevertheless been in use since the year 800. What other currencies do you recognize from the list? Some of the currency ages may surprise you.
