Which U.S. County Has the Highest Percentage of Drowsy Driving Fatalities?

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration collects data on drowsy driving fatalities annually. Highlighting the severe consequences, Naplab mapped counties with the highest drowsy driving fatalities relative to population.

• For counties with 500,000+ population, Jefferson County, Alabama, had the highest rate at 3.31%.
• In counties with populations between 150,000 and 500,000, Bastrop County, Texas, led with 20.72 fatalities per 100,000.
• In counties between 25,000 and 150,000, Walker County, Alabama, had the highest rate at 2132.64 per 100,000.
• For counties between 5,000 and 25,000, Pecos County, Texas, had 190.02 fatalities per 100,000.

One theory as to why there are so many counties from Texas on the list is that Texas’s long, dark highways may contribute to drowsy driving.
