Copyright means controlling the ability to make and distribute copies of Intellectual Property (IP). Generally, making copies is so easy but when you are on a computer it is trivial, so DRM uses encryption to ensure that copies are meaningless without authorisation. And licenses can provide strict limitations as to a user’s authority, including verifying their license validity, or only making documents accessible on specific hardware or physical locations. Encryption is used both to prevent unauthorised access to the content and to prevent forgery of the license conditions attached to the content.
