The team at Ooma collected three decades of data on self-employment numbers to show us what percentage of workers each year were self-employed.
We can see major trends in response to world events and crises from the 90s through today. For example, the COVID-19 pandemic reshaped the landscape of self-employment with incorporated self-employment rates surging upwards in 2020 as people sought more stable work and flexibility to work at home. Business closures and widespread layoffs still pushed more people to consider self-employment as the easiest way to return to work quickly. The trend disproportionately affected women with children, along with Black and Hispanic women, many of whom turned to self-employment opportunities to make ends meet.
