Are Student Attention Spans Declining?

The team at Brainscape are devoted to helping people improve their study habits and mental capacities. Their research reveals that attention spans are indeed in sharp decline, but they also proved that we can resist this erosion of attention. The average person’s attention span dropped dramatically between 2004 and 2024 from 2.5 minutes to 0.67 minutes. Students who use Brainscape show much more promising results. The app collected data on average length of study sessions and found that between 2015 and 2024 the average session length grew from 9.4 minutes to 14.1 minutes. This suggests that the mental strengthening exercises found in places like Brainscape’s app can have a powerful effect on improving our focus.
