The Most Banned and Challenged Books of the Past 8 Years

The American Library Association’s Office for Intellectual Freedom keeps track of the schools and libraries that request to remove materials based on their content. These challenges involve books that include content related to racism, LGBTQ+ content, profanity, and other critiques.

PlaygroundEquipment.com created an infographic that visualizes the most banned and challenged books of 2013-2020. In 2020, the most challenged/banned book was George (now published as Melissa) by Alex Gino. This book tells the story of a transgender girl trying to be herself to the world around her. Despite its numerous accolades for its depiction of the transgender experience, it has been one of the most commonly banned or challenged books since its publication.
