Harvard University was established back in 1636, making it the oldest university in the United States. This infographic features the oldest schools in each state in the U.S., per research from the team at Playground Equipment, based specifically on colleges and universities. Harvard University is one of just three universities within the United States to have been established during the 1600s, along with College of William & Mary (Williamsburg, Virginia in 1693) and St. John’s College (Annapolis Maryland in 1696). These three educational institutions are older than the country itself! Predating America’s establishment itself is impressive, and a few other schools across the U.S. that can make the same claim include University of Pennsylvania (1740), Princeton University (1746) and Dartmouth College (1769), among others.
