The team at Preply set out to find which words hold the key to making us seem competent and intelligent. They surveyed over a thousand Americans on their vocabulary habits.
The team uncovered how Americans perceive people who use complex words in different settings, which words are most impressive and which are pretentious, and how often people use them. Among the fun discoveries, the team found that some words are perceived as intelligent, like ambiguous, articulate, and exacerbate, while other big words sound pretentious, like capricious, equanimity, and sycophant.
You’ll learn a lot about American language habits with the team’s findings.
