Data breaches are an all-too-common event that pose major threats to modern businesses and sensitive consumer information. Ooma’s new infographic illustrates the depth of the problem through 30 key statistics that show a cybersecurity landscape rife with new threats.
The team’s findings show that financial stakes are at an all-time high. 2024 saw the most expensive data breach ever recorded, with an estimated global cost of $4.88 million. U.S. organizations faced an estimated $9.36 million in data exposure, which could shutter a small business forever. Healthcare loses the most money in a data breach, with an average of $9.77 million in damages.
The attacks have become more sophisticated over time. Malicious attacks account for 55% of data breach incidents. The remaining 45% is due to human error and system failures. This proves that security threats must be met through technical strength and training to eliminate internal weaknesses. Ransomware attacks have increased by 500%, and so have the recovery costs from data breaches, which cost about $2.73 million.
The study also shows that there are serious gaps in breach detection protocol. It takes organizations 204 days to detect a breach and another 73 days on average to contain it. That’s an almost 10-month exposure window.
The largest data breach in U.S. history was the Change Healthcare data breach in February 2024. This ransomware attack targeted 190 million medical records. These attacks can destroy a company since only 12% of attacked organizations report fully recovering from the impacts.
Organizations can use AI as part of their cybersecurity to help lower the costs of data breach prevention by about $2.2 million on average. Perfect security is impossible, but strategic investment, training, and cybersecurity can reduce the risk of a breach.
