The Ooma team conducted an analysis of the number of small businesses in each industry.
Small businesses drive 44% of U.S. economic activity and create most jobs post-pandemic. Defined by the SBA as companies with fewer than 500 employees, they dominate industries like construction (99.94%), hospitality (99.9%), and trade (99.87%). They foster competition, prevent monopolies, and strengthen local economies by sourcing materials locally.
Unlike corporate chains, small businesses add character and community identity. Though owning one is challenging, supporting them sustains jobs and ensures consumer choice. Shopping small—whether at local cafés, boutiques, or markets—helps build vibrant, thriving communities. Every purchase from a small business contributes to economic resilience and sustainability.
