Why Certain Smells Can Bring Back Memories

Smell has the most powerful link to memory, more than any of our other senses. As soon as your nose picks up a scent it travels to the brain’s smell processing center known as the olfactory bulb. This is linked directly to the part of the brain that is responsible for both emotion and memory, the amygdala and hippocampus respectively. This graphic titled The Powerful Link Between Smell, Memory and Emotion lists some very interesting facts. Certain scents like lavender can even have an effect on our stress levels. If you have a breakup, you can’t get over, switching your perfume or avoiding scents your ex used to wear can help you escape bad memories.
